Rick Calabrese, LPC

Mr. Calabrese completed a Master of Arts in Counseling at Northwestern University, as well as a Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.  

Prior to joining Chicago Psychotherapy, Mr. Calabrese was a staff therapist at Kenneth Young Center where he offered therapy to adolescents, adults and couples. During his time at Kenneth Young Center, Mr. Calabrese supported clients of all ages in working through a range of issues including Anxiety, Depression, career changes, school transitions, life transitions, sexual orientation and gender identity exploration and development, minority stress, trauma, and marital/couples distress.  Throughout this experience, Mr. Calabrese formed and maintained strong relationships with clients from various cultural backgrounds and worked diligently to provide a safe, nurturing, and productive therapeutic setting for his clients.

Mr. Calabrese has also worked in the fields of adult education, academic advising, consulting, and learning and development, and has experience working in both the corporate world and in higher education. Mr. Calabrese continues to work part-time in an educational setting as a counselor for a private Montessori high school in the Chicagoland area. Mr. Calabrese’s current specializations and clinical interests include: Anxiety Disorders; Mood Disorders; Adjustment to Career, School, and other Significant Life Transitions; Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Exploration and Development; Minority Stress; Creative Blocks; Executive Coaching; and Marriage/Couples Counseling.  

Mr. Calabrese uses an interpersonal process approach to therapy to develop and maintain trusting relationships with clients and drive change through the therapeutic relationship. Mr. Calabrese offers personalized application of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, drawing on his training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy orientations. Ultimately, Mr. Calabrese truly believes that part of the human experience includes feeling stagnant at times, and he sees that many individuals struggle through these moments alone. Mr. Calabrese seeks to partner with his clients, so that they never have to struggle alone through life’s more challenging phases. He brings kindness, compassion, authenticity, humor and expert knowledge to help his clients get unstuck, take worthwhile risks, and channel their efforts and energy into building more fulfilling lives.
